For me, starting something new is always difficult. When we travel someplace we have never been I do lots of research about weather and activities so we are prepared and have a good time. When I do a new quilt, I agonize over the pattern and fabrics I want to use because I want the receiver to love it! (Which explains why I am such a procrastinator.)
Writing is especially hard. I never know where to begin. Thank God for computers. I used to tell my students that they should be grateful that computers exist. “Back in the day” we had to start at the beginning and work our way to the end. To change a sentence, restructure a paragraph, or move an idea, we had to start over. Every misspelled word, forgotten capital letter or punctuation mark meant a brand new piece of paper and a redo. Every draft meant, start over. I can’t tell you how many times I finished a piece, only to find a typo or missing word, on the first page and then have to retype the whole…darn…thing!
Having said that, I like to write. I think the hardest part for me is that when I start a piece, I don’t always know where it will end up. Sometimes, the beginning becomes the middle and the end becomes the beginning. Sometimes the direction changes. Sometimes I have a topic but no idea where I want to take it. I am not one to throw something together quickly. I agonize over word choice and sentence structure but, I keep on writing.
Starting this blog has been a similar task. I want it to be perfect. I want you to get to know me. I want you to enjoy reading it and learn something from my experiences. I want the graphics to be perfect (that will be my steepest learning curve because…well…not my strong suit!) But, I’m not sure where we are going yet so, if you are so inclined, come along and enjoy the ride!
